Rule 36
To recap:
#1 – when they throw out a figure (first) for your compensation, pause before you respond. Ask (nicely) if they can do better. Usually they can do about as much as 25% better, depending on specialty and market rate. Even if their first price is market rate, still ask if they can do better. Certain industries, such as oil and gas, pay a premium amount over other kinds of organizations.
#2 – call recruiters and hiring managers back only if they call you first. Do not initiate! They must pursue you.
#5 – by the book. Better to observe them strictly if you're going to do them at all. You can never go wrong that way.
#7 – ask a Fairy. That’s what we're here for.
#10 – patience. You win nothing if you push. You get it all and then some if you don't. Discipline and patience.
#11 - Never stop practicing The Rules, even once you have the job. Control, self-discipline, and strategy always pay off - now, later, and in situations you could never forsee.
