In important matters one should use several strategies applied simultaneously. Keep different plans operating in an overall scheme; in this manner if any one strategy fails you would still have several others to fall back on.

Modern Example

I try not to leave anything to chance. It's not just enough to parry any attempts to reduce your power or influence. You have to cultivate those who can help you, to pay attention to what your peers are doing, and work on developing a reputation for being the "go-to guy". You have to ensure that you are not just pursuing defensive strategies; you have to go on the offensive before others do, so that you keep the lead.
